A Little About Me
| Source: Author |
Hi! Welcome to my blog, my first post is just a small introductory to who I am and the types of art and literature I enjoy. My name is Brandon Robinson. I'm a commuter student from Dedham, MA who came to Wentworth for the Construction Management program. More specifically, the concentration in commercial real estate development. Construction has always been a big interest of mine, I attended a technical high school where I majored in Electrical for about four years. After graduating, I decided to further my education as I didn't just want to be an electrician my entire career.
Normally during the first week of classes, students play ice-breaker games by exchanging names and what they like to do. Since this semester isn't like any other, we instead created a small snapshot of what we enjoy as an ice-breaker using apps like Padlet. Combining this tool with others like Pixabay, the finished “Avatar” projects give a quick glimpse as to what’s important to us. Although English has never been something I really enjoyed in school, there are many elements of literature and art that I do appreciate outside of it. This includes movies, t.v. shows, as well as the type of literature I like reading. In the Avatar page I created, the specific works from these elements I enjoy are described in more detail.
My favorite forms of art and literature are fictional. I feel like the greatest stories although maybe based on a real event, are derived from the imagination. Although I’ve enjoyed novels I was required to read for class, some of my favorite books are those that I read throughout middle school. The Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus novels by Rick Riordan are some all-time favorites. Losing track of time while becoming immersed in these stories is why I love the works so much.
I've always been a huge superhero fan growing up. Reading Marvel and DC comics as a kid transitioned to watching those same characters I read about on the big screen. I tend to enjoy all sorts of different shows as well, but most follow the same themes of fiction and adventure. At the moment, I'm watching The Legend of Korra which is an awesome successor to Avatar: The Last Airbender. Both shows bring otherworldly elements, mixing fantasy with conflicts and lessons that can be applied to the real world. The good-natured characters along with a great story line and character arcs is what makes these shows (and other works like them) so great.
Hey Brandon, I'm curious to what your opinion is on "non superhero superhero" movies like Deadpool and Hancock. I never was super interested in superhero movies myself, but my favorite movie ever is Deadpool and I'm a big fan of Hancock as well. I'm curious to what someone who loves superhero movies thinks about movies like these two. Are they a "disgrace" or do you enjoy them as much or more than normal movies? What could improve them if they're not liked?
ReplyDeleteDeadpool is an awesome movie, it's funny and Ryan Reynolds really nails the role too. I wouldn't call movies like those a disgrace by any means, so long as they're entertaining but obviously everyone's opinion on them will vary.

ReplyDeleteI loved your piece that you wrote.I also love to read/watch fictional stories. I was a fan of Percy Jackson growing up and I like superheroes as well. I also liked your take on english and literature too. I have recently watched the Flash on Netflix and I thought it was very good despite others' opinions. I am also from Massachusetts but closer to the boston area. I look forward to seeing more posts.
Hello,
ReplyDeleteI also read the Percy Jackson series in middle school, and I agree it is a good series. I also read some of the Heroes of Olympus series in middle school. I read the Amazing Spider-man comics as a kid. Those were a pretty good read for kids. I'm also a fan of books' fiction genre; I like how the author can make you picture an entire world of fantasy with a couple of paragraphs.
Hi Brandon! Thanks for sharing a bit about yourself here. I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying Korra, too! It was definitely a highlight of my quarantine to dive into that whole world. Your comments on literature remind me that I need to add Percy Jackson to my reading list; this is such a popular book, but somehow one I've missed! I think the concept seems like it would be right up my alley, so I'll have to read and report back to you my thoughts.
ReplyDeleteHave you seen The Boys on Amazon Prime? It has a really interesting twist on they typical superhero stories where all of the superheros are extremely pompous, greedy and money hungry. I find it to be a really interesting concept and coming from someone who is not usually a fan of the superhero shows and movies, I could not stop watching it!
ReplyDeleteHi Brandon,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your blog it seems that we have a lot in common. I also am a fan the Percy Jackson books this summer and am personally a huge fan of avatar and Korra. Avatar: the Last Airbender is probably my favorite series of all time. You have good taste I'm looking forward to reading what else you write this semester and I might have to get some show recommendations from you.
Hey Brandon, I am a big fan of Percy Jackson and Avatar: The Last Airbender too. Although I haven’t read Heroes of Olympus or watch The Legend of Korra, I definitely plans too. Have you heard that they’re remaking both Percy Jackson and Avatar: The Last Airbender life-action series?? I’m definitely excited about this. They better not disappoint the fans again. Also, my friends prefer Harry Potter over Percy Jackson and I wanna know what you think about this.
