Website Update

Image
My We bsite's New Banner Art Overall I'd say my progress on developing my project over this week went OK. I have a much clearer idea of the direction I want to head. I've better planned the specific lengths and ways I'm presenting information and I'm feeling confident. I didn't get as much work done as I would've liked to as this week had been busy in other areas. I did draft an intro section as well as revisions for one of my critical analyses and This I believe essay. I've been using Grammarly a lot more to edit my work and catch grammatical mistakes as well as improve word choice. I plan to finish revising my Enlightenment and Postmodernism pieces next week as well as further develop content on my topic. I don't think I have a single finished product on my website yet, but I do like the layout of my pieces at the moment. I have a lot left to do as we are all only getting started, but I don't think it will be as challenging as I initially a...

Postmodern Architecture Today

Image
Copenhill by Bjarke Ingels Group. Source: Azure           Postmodernism was the cultural movement that further developed philosophy, art, and architecture in the late 20th century following Modernism. The period brought with it an attitude of skepticism and rejection towards previously held ideologies. People began to criticize and drift from common practices. This included the perceived dullness and failed perfectionism of modern architecture ( Wikipedia ). The new style was a reaction against these things and embraced creativity and experimentation over traditional formality. Postmodern architecture is defined by its unique, asymmetrical shape, colors, and textures used in the building’s makeup.            A recently finished structure that echoes characteristics of postmodern architecture is the Amager Bakke or CopenHill power plant in Denmark. The energy-efficient power station was completed in 2017 by Bjarke I...

Website and Set-Up

Image
Source: Covers           After playing around with website formats and creating a few different pages on google sites, I've put together the basic components of what I want to be presented on my website. This was easier than I anticipated and also helps with the organization aspect. By laying out everything in front of me using headers and sections, I have a better idea of the direction I want to head in. I'm leaning more towards exclusively exploring ATLA after finding better articles to support my analysis of its universal themes and resurgence in popularity but won't make the decision just yet. This is my site so far, most of the headers and other information are just temporary placeholders so I know what I want to put where.

Exploring Nighthawks During a Pandemic

Image
Nighthawks Source: MyModernMet           Modernism was a time period during which previously accepted traditions were tossed aside, and society wanted to experiment with new styles. Art forms centered around “perfect” subjects and depicted god were no longer mainstream. These pieces were replaced with works that focused on the arrangement of lighting and colors and a realistic description of the topic. A very famous painting during the time period was Nighthawks by Edward Hopper.  Created in 1942, Hopper’s Nighthawks captures a few lonely residents of New York City, sitting inside a cheap diner. The subjects are isolated, a lone man sitting on one side of the bar across from a couple, all being served by the man behind the counter ( Richman-Abdou ). Although the painting is half a century old, the picture is still relevant to today’s circumstances. Even 6 months into the pandemic things are far from normal. As...

The Period of Modernism

Image
Pablo Picasso's Guernica  Source: Wikipedia Modernism was a philosophical movement that followed the Romantic era in the very late 19th century through the 20th century. The boom in technology and industrialization helped spark these new desires to create original art forms and ways of thinking. My infographic about the time period describes the ideals and works of art in more detail.

Developing a Topic

Image: Korra and her polar bear dog Naga Source:  @SMITE on Twitter           For my Archiving the Arts Project I’ll be focusing on related visual arts, more specifically, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra . It’s important to focus on a topic that really interests you and I really enjoyed watching these shows over the summer. Both are fresh in my mind and have a lot to offer, from the wide range of characters and their arcs to the important themes underlying the action and humor on the surface of the shows. I also will look to research different elements of each series, such as the animation style, music, and connections both share with one another. I’ll be taking all of my notes and keeping my content on google drive to stay organized. I also plan to work on the project every Friday and/or Saturday after finishing the previous modules for the week. I’m feeling more confident with the project after coming up with a ...

Romanticism in Pan's Labyrinth

Image
Image: The Pale Man Source: Indiewire           Romanticism swept across Europe following the Enlightenment period and the birth of new ideas. The movement emphasized emotion and individualism. It also focused greatly on the imagination. Literature was to be creative and original as the content came from the author’s own vision. Although the movement was eventually succeeded by Realism, the ideals of the Romantic period continued to be present in art and literature, even in modern times.  An accredited film of the early 2000s that echoes themes of the Romantic period is Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth . The film tells the story of a young girl, Ofelia, who is forced to live with her brutal step-father, Captain Vidal. She is led to an old labyrinth by a fairy, where she meets a faun who explains how she’s actually a princess and must complete specific tasks. This is where the story introduces a fantasy world, as supernatural beings help guide t...
